Emela-Ntouka Sightings

2 documented sightings across Likouala region of the Republic of the Congo.

  1. Likouala Swamps, Republic of Congo

Belgian administrator Lieutenant Frédéric Gromier documented testimony from Aka pygmies in the Likouala region describing a massive amphibious creature they called Emela-Ntouka — 'killer of elephants.' It was described as larger than a hippo with a single ivory horn on its snout and a long heavy tail. Informants claimed it had killed full-grown forest elephants they found gored near river edges.

  2. Near Dongou, Likouala Department, Republic of Congo

Congolese wildlife officials and local Baka hunters reported that an Emela-Ntouka was killed near the town of Dongou following a confrontation in which it had reportedly gored two hippos in shallow water. The carcass was said to have decayed before outside investigators could examine it; village accounts described a single horn, hairless gray-brown skin, and feet with three claws.
