Overview

The Morbach Monster is a werewolf-type cryptid associated with a traditional shrine and eternal flame near the village of Morbach in the German Rhineland-Palatinate. The 1988 incident at the US Air Force Morbach munitions depot brought the cryptid to broader attention and remains the cryptid's most documented modern case.

Identification

Reported as a wolf-like creature standing upright on two legs, taller than a man, with dark gray fur and powerful musculature. Eyewitness accounts from the 1988 base perimeter incident describe the creature clearing a 3-meter perimeter fence in a single leap. Local accounts describe deep gravelly howls heard in the surrounding forests.

Lore & Origin

The traditional origin story attributes the curse to Thomas Johannes Schwytzer, a soldier who deserted Napoleon's army during the 1812 Russian retreat and was killed by villagers after murdering a farming family; the farmer's wife reportedly cursed him to transform into a wolf at each full moon. The shrine and its eternal flame at the burial site remain maintained to the present day.
