  2. US Air Force Morbach munitions depot, near Wittlich, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany

A group of US Air Force personnel returning to the Morbach munitions depot noticed the eternal flame at the nearby Schwytzer shrine had gone out for the first time in living memory. Hours later perimeter alarms triggered at the base. Investigating security personnel encountered a large creature described as wolf-like but standing upright on two legs. It regarded the guard briefly before clearing a three-meter perimeter fence in a single leap. Military dogs at the base refused to pursue the creature into the surrounding forest.

  3. Morbach, Bernkastel-Wittlich district, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany

According to regional legend rooted in documented 19th-century oral accounts, a soldier named Thomas Johannes Schwytzer deserted Napoleon's army during the 1812 Russian retreat and fell in with bandits near Morbach. After murdering a farming family, the farmer's wife cursed him to transform into a wolf at each full moon. Schwytzer was killed by villagers and buried at a crossroads near the village, where an eternal flame was lit to contain the curse. The shrine and flame persist to the present day.
