Overview
Ninki Nanka is a large reptilian cryptid reported from the wetlands and slow rivers of Gambia, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Guinea. The cryptid has been the subject of multiple modern expeditions, including the 2006 British "Centre for Fortean Zoology" expedition led by Richard Freeman, which collected extensive eyewitness testimony but no physical evidence.
Identification
Reported at 9 to 30 meters in length with a long neck, a horse-like or crested head, scaled body, and three horns. Coloring is reportedly reflective or mirror-like under certain light conditions. The creature is reported as so dangerous that local tradition holds that any human who sees one will die within weeks — a belief that severely limits eyewitness accounts.
Lore & Origin
The Mandinka and Wolof peoples of the region preserve the most detailed traditional knowledge of the creature. The 1983 sighting by Papa Jinnah and the 2006 Richard Freeman expedition's eyewitness collection at Kotu Stream and the Gambia River represent the modern documentary core. The cryptid has been referenced in colonial-era British naturalist literature without formal investigation until the 21st century.
