Guest house on Creek Road, Ojai, Ventura County, California
An account submitted by Lee of Ojai described an experience that occurred at a guest house — a converted former barn — on Creek Road. Her boyfriend and a friend smelled strong wood smoke inside the house with no apparent source. A burnt humanoid figure with charred skin then appeared in the doorway and seemed to attempt communication before vanishing entirely. Both witnesses left the property immediately and refused to return after dark. The Creek Road corridor is the geographic core of the Char-Man tradition.

Creek Road bridge near Camp Comfort County Park, Ojai, Ventura County, California
A visitor to Ojai identified as David of Las Vegas had returned a third time with friends to investigate the Char-Man legend on Creek Road south of Ojai. While walking onto the bridge near Camp Comfort County Park he observed a strange man standing motionless at the bridge edge. The figure made no sound, did not respond to his presence, and simply vanished from view as he watched. The Char-Man tradition is rooted in the November 1948 Wheeler Springs / Matilija Canyon fire, in which a survivor was reportedly so badly burned he retreated permanently into the canyon brush.
