Off-duty police Sergeant Tony White and PC Andy Styles observed a large black cat-like creature crossing the road ahead of their vehicle at night. They estimated the animal at approximately five feet in length excluding the tail — far exceeding any domestic or feral cat. The officers filed a formal sighting report. Their account came the same year the Ministry of Agriculture launched its official investigation into Bodmin Moor big cat reports.

Jane Fuller, 37, was walking her dog late at night on the moor near her home in Cardinham when something struck her from behind, knocking her to the ground. When she regained her senses her dog was growling at an unseen shape retreating into the darkness. She suffered scratches consistent with large feline claws across her shoulders. The incident was reported to Devon and Cornwall Police.

Farmer Eric Ley of South Molton lost over 100 sheep in approximately three months to an unseen predator. Carcasses were found with deep throat injuries consistent with a large feline — clean incisions, minimal scatter of remains, and an absence of blood at the scene. Ley was convinced a large cat was responsible and his account made headlines across the UK, triggering the first sustained press coverage of the Beast.
