Burrunjor Sightings

2 documented sightings across Arnhem Land and the Northern Territory, Australia.

  1. Roper River area, Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, Australia

A family travelling toward the Roper River Mission reported seeing a pair of large bipedal reptilian creatures moving together through the scrub. The creatures were estimated at approximately 6 metres in length and reportedly covered in a combination of scales and feathers. Aboriginal elders in the area, when told of the sighting, confirmed the description matched their traditional accounts of the Burrunjor and warned the family not to camp in the area after dark. The Roper River region has among the highest concentration of Burrunjor accounts in Aboriginal oral tradition, documented by Australian researcher Rex Gilroy.

  2. McArthur River Station area, Northern Territory, Australia

Ranchers at a remote cattle station near the McArthur River reported a series of cattle mutilations over several days: more than half the herd was found dead or half-eaten, with enormous bipedal three-toed tracks found at the scene. Station hand Charles Waterman stated he witnessed the creature directly — a bipedal reptilian animal standing approximately 6 metres tall carrying off a cow in its jaws before retreating into the bush. When men pursued on horseback with dogs, the dogs refused to continue at the tree line. Aboriginal stockmen on the station recognized the description and linked it to Burrunjor legends from Arnhem Land, noting that cave paintings in the region depict a large bipedal creature predating any Western knowledge of dinosaurs.
