Labynkyr Devil Sightings

Biogeography associate professor Ludmila Emeliyanova from Moscow State University led a scientific diving expedition to Lake Labynkyr and used echo-sounding equipment to document several large underwater objects significantly bigger than any known fish species in the lake. 'I can't say we literally found and touched something unusual there, but we did register with our echo-sounding device several seriously big underwater objects,' she stated. The lake's near-constant 2°C surface temperature in a region where all surrounding lakes freeze solid remains unexplained.

Geologist Viktor Tverdokhlebov, leading an East Siberian branch Soviet Academy of Sciences expedition, observed a large animal moving through the surface water of Lake Vorota. In his diary he noted it moved in an arc — first parallel to the shore, then directly toward their position — before submerging. He described it as the size of an orca with dark grey skin. His team later found the jawbone and skeletal remains of an unknown large animal on the lakebed.

Yakut elder Nikolai Gladkov described to researchers how as a child he watched a large creature surface near his family's fishing boat on Lake Labynkyr. His father immediately paddled for shore without looking back. Gladkov described a wide, flat head, a jawline a third the length of the body, and a horn-like protrusion above the brow. Local Yakut oral tradition consistently refers to the creature as 'the devil' and forbids fishing in the lake's deepest central section.
