Mecheny Sightings

2 documented sightings across Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug, Western Siberia, Russia.

  1. Remote hunting cabin, Khanty-Mansiysk region, Western Siberia, Russia

In mid-October 1987 the family's dog was found dead with its skull crushed and body torn apart. The following August, Maya Bykova and the Mansi hunter observed Mecheny for seventy-five minutes from the cabin's window as it moved through the forest edge, apparently foraging for frogs or small rodents. Bykova noted it moved with fluid, unhurried confidence and showed no awareness of being observed. This remains one of the longest documented continuous observations of an unidentified hominid in Russia.

  2. Remote hunting cabin, Khanty-Mansiysk region, Western Siberia, Russia

Researcher Maya Bykova, who had traveled to the area after a young Mansi man described 40 years of regular encounters near his family's hunting lodge, was awoken before dawn when the cabin window was struck by a knocking. She and the Mansi family rushed outside to find a figure more than six feet tall leaning against a dead tree approximately 20 meters away. It was covered in reddish-brown hair except for a distinctly white patch on the left forearm — the feature that gave it its Mansi name Mecheny, meaning 'The Marked One.' After approximately one minute it retreated when the family's dog charged.
