Mapinguari Sightings
6 documented sightings across Amazon basin of Brazil, Bolivia, and Peru.
Karitiana territory, Rondônia, Brazil
Karitiana hunter Geovaldo, age 27, reported being attacked by a large hairy biped near an area his tribe calls the cave of the Mapinguari while hunting wild pigs. He fired at the creature multiple times with no apparent effect before fleeing. Separately, Lucas Karitiana described his son encountering the creature near the village — the boy was overcome by the animal's foul odor and briefly lost consciousness.

Tapajós River basin, Pará, Brazil
Dr. David Oren, ornithologist and former director of zoology at the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi in Belém, documented over 80 sightings along the Tapajós River basin during fieldwork spanning the 1970s through 1990s. Oren reported personally hearing unidentified animal vocalizations he could not attribute to any known Amazonian species, and obtained hair samples that were later analyzed but proved inconclusive.

Rio Juruá valley, Amazonas, Brazil
During Dr. David Oren's expeditions in the mid-1990s, a group of Kanamarí people living along the Rio Juruá described raising two infant Mapinguaris on bananas and milk before the animals grew too large to manage and returned to the forest. The accounts were among 50 interviews Oren conducted with indigenous communities, rubber tappers, and miners, all describing a consistent creature profile.

Roadside farm, 38 km from Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil
Investigator Luis Jorge Salinas documented repeated sightings on a farm 38 kilometers from Manaus over a 12-month period. The farm's owner and two workers separately described a large, upright, hairy creature approaching the property at dusk. Salinas noted consistent details across independent accounts including a penetrating sulfurous smell and a single loud vocalization before each disappearance into the forest.

Acre state, western Amazon, Brazil
A three-week rampage attributed to a Mapinguari in Acre state left over 100 cattle dead, with tongues ripped out and carcasses left otherwise intact. Ranchers across several fazendas independently described loud roaring at night before discovering dead livestock at dawn. The incident was reported to state wildlife authorities and remained unexplained; no known predator in the region kills in that pattern.

Purus River basin, Amazonas, Brazil
A rubber tapper working the Purus River tributaries reported being stalked and attacked by a creature he described as over seven feet tall, covered in matted reddish-brown fur, emitting a catastrophic roar and a nauseating odor. The creature's claws tore through tree bark effortlessly. His account, collected by local authorities, described a mouth set vertically in the chest — consistent with Mapinguari descriptions collected across the western Amazon.
