  1. Nahuel Huapi Lake, Bariloche, Patagonia, Argentina

    An anonymous photographer delivered images to the local newspaper El Cordillerano with a handwritten note: 'It is not a twisted tree trunk. It is not a wave. Nahuelito has shown his face. Lake Nahuel Huapi, Saturday April 15, 9 o'clock. I'm not giving out my personal information in order to avoid future headaches.' The photographs showed a large elongated form breaking the surface and were reprinted internationally.

  2. Nahuel Huapi Lake, Patagonia, Argentina

    Multiple tourists and fishermen filed independent reports in the early 1960s of a large hump-backed creature moving across the lake surface near the south shore. Descriptions were consistent across unconnected witnesses — a dark, rounded mass rising a meter or more above the water, moving against wind and waves before submerging without wake.

  3. Unnamed lake, Patagonian Andes, Argentina

    American gold prospector Martin Sheffield reported to Dr. Clemente Onelli, director of the Buenos Aires Zoo, that he had observed a creature with 'a huge neck like a swan and movements suggesting the body of a crocodile' surfacing in a remote Patagonian lake. Sheffield also described enormous tracks and crushed undergrowth leading to the water's edge. Onelli mounted a formal expedition to investigate, which found no physical evidence but drew international press coverage.

  4. Nahuel Huapi Lake, near Bariloche, Patagonia, Argentina

    George Garrett, working at a company on the lake's shore, observed a creature approximately 400 meters offshore as he was preparing to disembark. The visible portion of the animal was between 5 and 7 meters long and protruded roughly 2 meters above the waterline. He estimated a body diameter of 15 to 20 feet and watched it for 15 minutes before it submerged. Garrett kept the sighting private until 1922, when he disclosed it in a letter published by the Toronto Globe.
