Minhocão Sightings

3 documented sightings across Southern Brazil, Uruguay, and northern Argentina.

  1. Rio das Caveiras, near Lages, Santa Catarina, Brazil

Francisco de Amaral Varella reported encountering a strange animal of gigantic size lying on the bank of the Rio das Caveiras near Lages. He described it as nearly one meter in thickness, not very long, with a snout resembling a pig's. The account was collected by zoologist Fritz Müller and published in the journal Zoologische Garten in 1877, representing one of the most credible documented sightings of the Brazilian Minhocão.

  2. Paraná state interior, Brazil

A young man witnessed a large pine tree suddenly overturn with no visible cause. Upon approaching he found the earth actively moving and glimpsed a massive black worm-like creature approximately 25 meters long with two horn-like protrusions on its head lying in the churned mud. The encounter was over in seconds as the creature disappeared beneath the surface. Fritz Müller recorded the account alongside physical evidence of deep earth furrows consistent with a large burrowing animal.

  3. Rural Paraná, Brazil

A woman going to draw water from a pool near her home found it completely destroyed and observed an animal she described as 'as big as a house' moving off along the ground and disappearing into deep water. She summoned neighbors who arrived too late to see the animal but examined a track showing it had passed over a large rock. The account was among several collected by Fritz Müller from Paraná residents in the 1840s–1860s.
