Chemomi Tea Estate, Nandi Hills, Western Kenya
Farm manager Douglas Hutton encountered two large hyena-like animals on the Chemomi Tea Estate that stood noticeably taller than known spotted hyenas, moved with a distinctive rolling lope, and were gray in color. Hutton shot both animals and transported the carcasses to the Coryndon Museum in Nairobi, where they were controversially classified as giant forest hyenas.

Trans-Nzoia District, Rift Valley Province, Kenya
A settler reported to provincial authorities that a creature standing approximately eight feet tall and described as resembling a gray polar bear had charged him in a maize field, leaving distinctive claw marks on a fence post. The district officer noted twelve cattle were found dead nearby with injuries inconsistent with known predators.

Near Kapsowar, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Kenya
Colonial records from the Elgeyo-Marakwet district described an animal identified by Marakwet elders as the 'chemosit' that had killed several villagers near Kapsowar. A hunting party was organized and tracks were cast, but the creature was not found; the tracks were described as neither lion nor hyena.

Near Soy, Trans-Nzoia, Western Kenya
Farmer Clement Toulson reported sighting a creature near Soy that appeared 18 to 20 inches at the shoulder with long shaggy hair on its forequarters and a shuffling, bear-like walk. Toulson, an experienced hunter familiar with local fauna, stated he had never seen anything resembling it in decades in East Africa.

Uasin Gishu Plateau, Western Kenya
Explorer Geoffrey Williams, traveling on the Uasingishu plateau, reported encountering a large animal sitting upright on its haunches no more than 30 yards distant. Williams described a bear-like profile with a pronounced head and powerful forelimbs; the creature studied him briefly before descending to all fours and retreating into the bush.
