Kariakoo neighbourhood, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
In 2007 a fresh wave of Popobawa reports emerged in Dar es Salaam, with residents of the Kariakoo area describing the characteristic sulfur smell, sudden darkness, and a looming winged shape. Many families abandoned their homes at night and repeated the protective rituals documented during the 1995 Zanzibar outbreak.

Zanzibar Town (Stone Town), Unguja Island, Zanzibar
By early April 1995 the Popobawa panic had reached Zanzibar Town on Unguja Island. Residents gathered in outdoor groups at night believing the entity would not attack in public. On the night of 3 April a visiting mainland Tanzanian was killed by a mob in Zanzibar Town after residents concluded he was a manifestation of the creature.

Mkoani, Pemba Island, Zanzibar
In the first week of February 1995, residents of Mkoani on Pemba Island began reporting nocturnal assaults by an entity they identified as Popobawa. Men described the presence of a sulfurous smell and crushing physical sensation; victims stated they were compelled to tell others of the attack or suffer its return. The panic originated in this southern district before spreading island-wide.
